Knock Knock vs. Hotjar
First, the thing that matters most if you are reading this in 2026: Hotjar is not a separate product any more. It has merged into Contentsquare, hotjar.com now redirects there, and existing accounts are being migrated across. Here is what that means, and where the two tools actually differ.
Hotjar and Contentsquare pricing, migration terms and product documentation verified on 11 September 2026, including the live redirects from hotjar.com. Knock Knock pricing and tier features read from knockknockapp.ai/pricing on 11 September 2026.
Hotjar is now Contentsquare — read this part first
Hotjar joined Contentsquare back in 2021 and the legal entities merged in July 2025, but 2026 is when it became real for customers. hotjar.com redirects to contentsquare.com, the Hotjar pricing page is gone, and the old Observe, Ask and Engage product pages are dead. The legacy app still runs for existing customers, but there is no longer a Hotjar you can go and buy.
If you are a current Hotjar customer, the migration terms are worth knowing. Contentsquare began contacting accounts from late August 2026. There is a 30-day transition window, after which a subscription switches to the Contentsquare Growth plan unless the account owner actively opts out. The old Hotjar account then goes read-only for 90 days and stops collecting data — and after those 90 days, the historical Hotjar data is deleted. Migration also needs a new tracking tag on the site; the Hotjar snippet does not carry over. If you have years of session history you care about, export it before that window closes.
Hotjar answers “why did this page underperform?” Knock Knock answers “who is on it right now and should we call them?” Hotjar is retrospective and anonymous by design; Knock Knock is live and identifies people. Neither of those is a criticism — they are simply built for different people doing different work.
Being direct about the limits, because this is the page where overclaiming would be easiest: Knock Knock does not do heatmaps, and it does not do conversion funnel reports. It does not produce a pixel-level video replay of a session either. What it gives you is the live visitor journey — every page in sequence with time on each, as it happens, attributed to an identified person and company, with historical playback of that journey afterwards. If what you want is a click map of your pricing page, Hotjar does that and we do not.
The flip side is the part Hotjar cannot do at all. A Hotjar recording is anonymous and you watch it later. You cannot tell that the session belonged to an operations manager at a company you have been chasing, you cannot see it while it is happening, and you certainly cannot start a conversation with them mid-session. That is the entire point of Knock Knock.
“Later” is more literal than most people realise. Contentsquare's own documentation is explicit that a recording is a reconstruction of events, not a live screen feed, and that it is only assembled once the session has ended. A session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity or when the visitor leaves, and processing then takes up to another hour. So the realistic gap between someone browsing your pricing page and you being able to watch it is somewhere between half an hour and an hour and a half. By then they have made their decision.
Side by side
| Hotjar | Knock Knock | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | Understanding how pages perform, so you can improve them | Identifying and converting the people on those pages, now |
| Pricing | No standalone Hotjar pricing exists any more. Contentsquare Experience Analytics has a free tier that includes replays, heatmaps and funnels; Growth plans run $49–$739/mo by session volume. Surveys are billed separately as Voice of Customer, free then $99–$1,479/mo. Pro and Enterprise are quote-only | $197 / $275 / $599 / $1,197 per month by sub-account count, each with a monthly AI wallet covering all usage |
| Heatmaps (click, move, scroll) | Yes — this is a core Hotjar strength | No. Scroll depth and click patterns are captured as intent signals, but there are no heatmap visualisations |
| Conversion funnels | Yes | No funnel reports |
| Session recording | Yes — full replay of mouse movement, clicks and scrolling, watched after the session ends | Live journey view plus historical playback of the page sequence and time on each page — not a pixel-level video replay |
| Live, while they are still browsing | No. Recordings are explicitly retrospective. The session has to end first — 30 minutes of inactivity or the visitor leaving — and then processing takes up to another 60 minutes | Yes — a real-time feed of who is on the site, ranked by intent score |
| Who the visitor is | Anonymous. User Attributes can label people you have already identified yourself, which is not the same as de-anonymising traffic | KnockID resolves anonymous visitors to a company, and to a named contact where available |
| Act on it in the moment | No. Hotjar reports; it does not engage anyone | Yes — AI chat, voice, live video, or an alert to a human, triggered while the visitor is still there |
| Surveys and feedback widgets | Yes — a genuine Hotjar capability we do not match | No |
| Writes to your CRM | No CRM write-back. The HubSpot and Slack integrations are notification and export flows; Enterprise data feeds are warehouse exports. There is no official GoHighLevel integration | GoHighLevel and HubSpot — identified visitor, full journey and intent score |
| Agency resale | Weak. Team members get access to a whole Organization, not to individual sites, so each client needs its own Organization. Paid plans cap projects (3 on Growth). No platform white-label, and the partner programme is referral commission rather than resale | White-label and custom domain from the $275 Startup tier upward; sub-accounts per plan |
Read the heatmap and funnel rows as written. Those are real Hotjar features that Knock Knock does not have, and any comparison that blurs that is not worth trusting on the rows that follow it.
Which one you should actually pick
Choose Hotjar / Contentsquare if…
- You are optimising pages. Heatmaps, funnels and full session replay are the right tools for that job and we are not pretending otherwise.
- You need to see exactly where people rage-click, hesitate or abandon a form, pixel by pixel. Rage-click and engagement-zone maps are real, useful features.
- You want on-page surveys and feedback widgets.
- Your traffic is consumer, not business — visitor identification is a B2B capability and will not help you much on consumer traffic.
Choose Knock Knock if…
- You care who the visitor is, not just what the cursor did.
- You want to act while they are on the page rather than read about it on Friday.
- Your traffic is B2B and the companies visiting your pricing page are worth chasing.
- You are an agency and need something you can brand and resell, which Hotjar is not built for.
Frequently asked questions
Does Knock Knock have heatmaps?
No. Knock Knock captures scroll depth and click patterns as behavioural signals that feed a 0-100 intent score, but it does not produce heatmap visualisations and it does not do conversion funnel reports. If you want a click map of a landing page, Hotjar is the right tool and the two work perfectly well side by side.
Is Knock Knock's session view the same as Hotjar's session recording?
No, and the difference matters. Hotjar replays the session itself — mouse movement, clicks, scrolling — anonymously, after it has finished. Knock Knock shows the visitor's journey live as it happens: which pages, in what order, how long on each, attributed to an identified person and company, with historical playback of that journey afterwards. One is for diagnosing a page, the other for catching a lead.
Can Hotjar tell me which company is on my website?
No. Hotjar sessions are anonymous. It offers User Attributes, which let you attach data about people you have already identified yourself — a logged-in user, for example. That is labelling people you already know, not identifying strangers. Resolving anonymous traffic to a company or contact is what KnockID does.
Should I replace Hotjar with Knock Knock?
Only if what you were using Hotjar for was really a sales problem rather than a design problem. If your team genuinely uses heatmaps and funnels to improve pages, keep it. Plenty of agencies run both: Hotjar to make the page better, Knock Knock to catch the people already on it.
Can an agency resell Hotjar to clients?
Not in any meaningful sense. There is no platform-level white-labelling — the only branding control is on survey widgets, where a paid Voice of Customer plan lets you add a logo and remove Contentsquare branding. The partner programme is a referral commission scheme paying 15–25% of revenue, and the client contracts directly with Contentsquare. Notably, sites you host under your own agency account do not qualify as referrals at all, so you either hold the account and earn nothing on it, or you refer the client away and lose control of it.
What happens to my Hotjar account and data?
Contentsquare started migrating accounts from late August 2026. You get a 30-day transition window, after which the subscription moves to the Contentsquare Growth plan unless the account owner opts out. The Hotjar account then becomes read-only for 90 days and collects no new data, and the historical data is deleted at the end of that period. Migration also requires installing a new Contentsquare tracking tag, because the Hotjar snippet does not carry over. Export anything you need to keep before the 90 days are up.
Does Hotjar integrate with GoHighLevel?
No. There is no official GoHighLevel integration, and Contentsquare has no lead object to write into. You will find pages from various automation directories claiming a two-way GoHighLevel and Hotjar sync — those are auto-generated for every possible pair of apps and the claims are boilerplate rather than a real, tested capability. Knock Knock is natively integrated with GoHighLevel and writes the identified visitor, their journey and their intent score straight onto the contact record.
